Congratulations to Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch for their documentary, Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado on Netflix. I was commissioned by Vogue Italia to photograph Walter Mercado in 1998. This is one of the portraits from that session and it is now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. It was a joy and honor to photograph Walter. He was gracious, kind and very generous with his time to allow me to capture him. For this portrait, I asked him to channel Greta Garbo when she says, “I want to be alone”. He did, and this is the outcome of that magical moment.
