Celia Cruz “Guantanamera - Yo soy de Cuba la voz” from the book, Presenting Celia Cruz.
Celia Cruz “Guantanamera - Yo soy de Cuba la voz” from the book, Presenting Celia Cruz. This image of Cuban singer, Celia Cruz is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery which has called it the iconic photograph of Celia Cruz. Little did we know at that moment, that it would also become the cover of our book, Presenting Celia Cruz. We grew up listening to her voice, she was always in the background of our youth and in 1988, when we were two struggling artists living in London surviving on bread and mayonnaise, we met Celia for the first time. That was the beginning of a friendship and a photographic collaboration which would last for over 15 years. In 1994 we conceived and proposed a fashion story to L’Uomo Vogue Magazine on Miami Cuban style entitled, Sol sobre Miami (Sun over Miami) with a text by Cuban novelist, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, one of Latin-American literature’s most important writers. This shoot gave us the opportunity to photograph Celia. Our vision for this portrait was to capture her on a Cuban landscape and since she was not allowed by the Cuban government to ever return to her native Cuba, we recreated one and found a beautiful location at Fairchild Tropical Garden in Coral Gables, Florida where the Cuban palms make for a perfect backdrop. She was internationally known as the “Queen of Salsa” and "La Guarachera de Cuba” so, we wanted her to wear a traditional “guarachera” dress, (which she hadn’t worn in years) and a “Maria Caracoles” hairdo to reach the heavens. Lucky for us, she went into her wardrobe archives and found this stunning ruffled lime green gown. This was one of the most magical shoots we’ve ever done. Not only did we have a Cuban legend standing in front of our lens but, to have her sing “Guantanamera” a cappella, arms outstretched and so full of passion was a wonderful gift. A beautiful backdrop, a gloriously golden Miami sunset and that unique, sublime and powerful voice echoing throughout the entire garden. It was pure magic. She was the light. Celia is Cuba and Cuba Is Celia. Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte in collaboration with Tico Torres
